The role of the turbine to transform the energy of the water, steam or the wind into mechanical energy so as to turn a generator. The generator, in turn, converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. In the case of hydro, called turbine generator turbine and generator that work together.
Francis turbine
This turbine is the most widely used in Hydro-Québec's generating fleet.Water enters the periphery of the wheel, pushes the blades, then moves towards the axis of the turbine. It then flows via the leakage channel situated underneath it. It takes its name from James Bicheno Francis (1815-1892), American engineer who invented it in 1849.
Kaplan
This turbine, invented by Austrian engineer Viktor Kaplan (1876-1934), like the propeller turbine, but the blades are adjustable. It suits some plants along the river located on rivers particularly variable flow because you can adjust the position of the blades according to flow.
Kaplan turbines of Brisay weigh 300 tons each, equivalent to 50 African elephants.
Turbine impeller
When the drop height is low, the turbine propeller proves very advantageous because it allows to obtain high speeds. This turbine is suitable for power plants over the water.
Pelton
The waterwheel, named after its inventor, the American Lester Pelton (1829-1908), recovers the energy of moving water through troughs shaped spoon.
